The American Cocker Spaniel breed was developed to become the dog we know today in the 19th century. It was bred to retrieve quail. This breed is quite different to his English cousin, the Cocker Spaniel, known in other parts of the world as the English Cocker Spaniel. The differences in head and skull are very apparent; the skull is rounded and the eyes are round, full and look forward, whereas most breeds have the eyes set to the sides of the head.

These dogs are typically happy, trusting, and intelligent. However, their popularity also led to considerable bad breeding in an attempt to keep up with the demand, and some lines contain dogs who tend to be high strung and snappish. As with all puppies, owners are advised to choose their breeder very carefully.
