The Chinese Crested is an ancient dog that many believe to have originated in Africa. From there, it made its way to China, became the pet of the Mandarin, then found its way to Europe and South America. The Chinese Crested was previously known by several other names, such as Chinese Hairless, Chinese Edible Dog, Chinese Ship Dog and Chinese Royal Dog. This breed was carried on ships to eliminate vermin onboard, and puppies were traded in port cities. This breed is still found in quantity in port cities in China. This breed has been found all over the world dating back as far as the 1500s. The Crested became a popular show dog in the late 1800s.
Chinese Cresteds are agile, busy, happy and alert. They are loyal and affectionate dogs who make wonderful, playful, and entertaining companions.
