Rhodesian Ridgeback

Rhodesian Ridgeback

Large

South Africa

The Rhodesian Ridgeback dog breed comes from South Africa. This breed originated in Rhodesia where the breed standard was first written in 1922. The Breed Standard is based on that of the Dalmatian and was first registered by the South African Kennel Club SAKU (now KUSA) in 1924. At that time KUSA was the only Kennel Club in the region. The breed was first admitted into the American Kennel Club in 1955 as a member of the Hound Group.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are very loyal, intelligent, gentle, and are very independent dogs. They are, however, sometimes aloof to strangers. This breed of dog requires training and dedication and is only for the very experienced of dog owners.
