This breed was a versatile dog used for hunting, guarding, herding and often used as temple guards in its native country of China. Unfortunately it was almost driven to extinction in mainland China, but has been repopulated in the Western Hemisphere in the last quarter of the 20th century.
Regal, alert, intelligent, dignified, lordly, scowling, sober and snobbish essentially independent and somewhat standoffish with strangers, but extreme in his devotion to his family. The Shar-Pei stands firmly on the ground with a calm, confident stature.
